Summary

Like the one-time bestseller Jonathan Livingston SeagullThe Alchemist presents a simple fable, based on simple truths and places it in a highly unique situation。 And though we may sniff a bestselling formula, it is certainly not a new one: even the ancient tribal storytellers knew that this is the most successful method of entertaining an audience while slipping in a lesson or two。 Brazilian storyteller Paulo Coehlo introduces Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who one night dreams of a distant treasure in the Egyptian pyramids。 And so he's off: leaving Spain to literally follow his dream。

Along the way he meets many spiritual messengers, who come in unassuming forms such as a camel driver and a well-read Englishman。 In one of the Englishman's books, Santiago first learns about the alchemists--men who believed that if a metal were heated for many years, it would free itself of all its individual properties, and what was left would be the "Soul of the World。" Of course he does eventually meet an alchemist, and the ensuing student-teacher relationship clarifies much of the boy's misguided agenda, while also emboldening him to stay true to his dreams。 "My heart is afraid that it will have to suffer," the boy confides to the alchemist one night as they look up at a moonless night。

"Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself," the alchemist replies。 "And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second's encounter with God and with eternity。" --Gail Hudson

If you enjoy parables, then you’ll enjoy this story。 I found some nuggets of wisdom in it, but all in all found I was thankful it was short。 While I adore Jeremy Irons, as a narrator, some of his characterizations baffled me。 Such as, why is the Alchemist so angry? It made it hard to listen to him。

So good。 I must read it again!

Simple but profound。 We are all on our quests to discover the treasures of life and our true purpose。 There is a lot to be gained from thinking about this beautifully written book。 I was equally admiring of Coelho's own life story in which he overcame hospitalization for "mental illness" in his youth, cast off the chains of convention, and followed his own "personal legend。" I kept thinking of other quest books, such as Siddhartha, when I read this one, and I think this one resonates for me even Simple but profound。 We are all on our quests to discover the treasures of life and our true purpose。 There is a lot to be gained from thinking about this beautifully written book。 I was equally admiring of Coelho's own life story in which he overcame hospitalization for "mental illness" in his youth, cast off the chains of convention, and followed his own "personal legend。" I kept thinking of other quest books, such as Siddhartha, when I read this one, and I think this one resonates for me even more。 There are a lot of hidden gems of wisdom within。 If you enjoyed The Little Prince, you would probably enjoy this book, too。 This talk of the "personal legend" sounds like malarkey when I write about it here, so The Alchemist really has to be read to be appreciated。 。。。more

At times, I thought "this book is boring, but at least it's short。 I'm going to finish it。" I'm not sure it all landed with me the way the author intended 。 。 。 It's abstract enough for me to forget, like waking up from a weird dream, but I'm glad I at least finished。 The spirituality here is not for me。 At times, I thought "this book is boring, but at least it's short。 I'm going to finish it。" I'm not sure it all landed with me the way the author intended 。 。 。 It's abstract enough for me to forget, like waking up from a weird dream, but I'm glad I at least finished。 The spirituality here is not for me。 。。。more

finished this literally, like, five minutes ago and i feel like i left my consciousness in the sixth dimension。 i haven’t come down from the euphoric high this left me with, yet。 a perfect allegory of the depth and complexities one can experience through human interaction。 it brandishes the intricacies of personal legends, gives an insightful outlook on how people’s lives greatly differ from one perspective to another, and was overall an incredibly original, fresh, and enlightening read。

There will be people who hate this book, the other love it。 It's hard to find someone who is neutral about it after reading the whole story。 I think it's a fair fight about being a dreamer and being a realist。 Many will say the protagonist is so irresponsible, leaving everything behind。 But in fact, he's not。 His family never needs him to stay, they just want him to be stable; his father was once like him but his fear had pulled him out of his dreaming and he doesn't want to tread the same path There will be people who hate this book, the other love it。 It's hard to find someone who is neutral about it after reading the whole story。 I think it's a fair fight about being a dreamer and being a realist。 Many will say the protagonist is so irresponsible, leaving everything behind。 But in fact, he's not。 His family never needs him to stay, they just want him to be stable; his father was once like him but his fear had pulled him out of his dreaming and he doesn't want to tread the same path as his father did。 His lover never forces him to stay, she wants him to be happy。 By being truly happy within his heart, he then can make her happy。 It's rather platonic。 I think, the woman is wise, these days, we are covered with fear of instability and so on。 What we call "responsibility" mainly caused by a sense of selfishness。 Yes, it was truly a boyfriend who needs responsibility to his girl, a son has responsibility for his family。 In the past, things were severe, parents without children taking care of them might die easily, for example。 But that's unlikely to be the case of the story。 I think if we keep thinking that the main character is irresponsible to his family, his girl, then we also need to think on the opposite side。 If the family and his girl force him to stay (which the boy will do) with his heart unresting, then they are also very selfish just thinking about themselves。 I don't say that it's bad。 Everybody wants people they love to be responsible for them but by what standard we can defy it as good or bad, right and wrong? Most of us just look at what the mass do and conclude that something is good or bad, right or wrong。 But most of the time, history has proved that the mass has been often wrong。 Colombo embarked on a likely no-return journey to discover the Americas, is anyone who says that Colombo was bad, irresponsible leaving his family behind for his love of discovery? The main character of this story just does the same。 I think people who criticize this story need to absorb the story with a more open mind than not because they think something is right meaning that others have to think it's right too。 It's uneasy as the boy does not violate something such as law, or does something morally unacceptable。 His journey was a mental journey with a different perspective of eyes different from most ordinary people。 I too doubt that I can choose to follow my heart like the protagonist, however, this is a great story, a bit mystical, but absolutely great for any dreamer。 。。。more

Es la historia del camino hacia un sueño y como a través del camino se aprende a entender la meta。

It’s really a 3。5 star but goodreads doesn’t do half stars I feel like this was really insightful and I learned a lot, but also i think some of it can easily go over peoples heads。 This isn’t a book that I personally see myself constantly thinking about after reading it which is why I didn’t rate it higher, but I genuinely think it teaches a lot about life and finding your purpose and listening to your heart。 This is a book I want to teach my future students someday。

I hesitate to give three stars, because this was just an ok book for me。 Yet I felt two was dismissive of it as a whole, if I could I’d go for two and a half。 There are plenty of synopsis ratings so I’ll skip that and just say that while I appreciated the themes, I didn’t love the execution。

I liked the fact that this book is allegorical - I think books like this, 1984 and Brave New World that are technically fiction but are written with other ideas in mind are very powerful and underutilised。 That said, I felt this book fell short of its potential。 The storyline, the mysticism, some of the themes all have the makings of a very good book。 For me however, the underlying message/point of the book is basically "follow your dreams" which I find to be a message that is not deserving of t I liked the fact that this book is allegorical - I think books like this, 1984 and Brave New World that are technically fiction but are written with other ideas in mind are very powerful and underutilised。 That said, I felt this book fell short of its potential。 The storyline, the mysticism, some of the themes all have the makings of a very good book。 For me however, the underlying message/point of the book is basically "follow your dreams" which I find to be a message that is not deserving of the groundwork that the rest of this book is。 After finishing the book I has this feeling that "this can't be all that its about" or "what am I missing", but after some reading and analysis confirmed that the "follow your dreams" mantra was the main point of the novel I was underwhelmed。 Some of the secondary messages, i。e。 the idea that the journey rather than the outcome is often more important, valuable and fulfilling, are more valuable than the primary message in my view。 Additionally, whilst the "follow your dreams" message was clear, the rest of the ideas the book touches on seemed to be incorporated randomly and kind of for the sake of it。 Every time Santiago met a new character I found myself asking "whats the point of this" and "where on earth is this heading"。 Maybe I've read too many other non-fiction books and so this seemed unoriginal to me, or maybe this book isn't as revolutionary in 2021, but for me it just missed the mark and was a bit "meh"。 。。。more
